The Pour de France – Sacramento’s second annual Bastille Day Waiter Race

I didn't have any exciting plans for last night -- just another Thursday, and I figured I'd stay home and work on my backlog of post-processing. Then yesterday morning I got wind via Sacramento Connect that in the evening, a scant three blocks from my apartment, the second annual Sacramento Bastille Day Waiter Race would be held. Now, given that I've →

Wordless Wednesday: Waiting.

Modern-day Titanic

Let me start off by saying that not only is this not my video, but it's not my music, and it's not even my idea. John saw this first-person video taken during the tornado in Joplin, MO yesterday, and he had the bright idea of setting it to "Nearer My God To Thee", which is in the annals of history →

Taiko!

Yesterday I rode my bike down to Old Sac with John and Mike for the Asian Pacific Rim Festival. Mike wanted to have some good Asian food, I wanted to see the taiko drummers, and John got dragged along for the ride. Now, if you've never seen taiko (link goes to the Wikipedia article) I really think it's one of those →

Wordless Wednesday: music-watching

Neighborhood music

This past Saturday was Second Saturday, so John and I walked over to the coffee shop across the street from us to grab a drink and watch Stoneberry, the band a friend of mine is in, play. It was a kick to just hang out and people-watch and listen to some good live music, and get to really relax and →

The Zamboni man can ’cause he mixes it with love and makes the ice skate good

Who can take an ice rink, scrape it a time or two Cover it with warm water and melt the ice into a goo The Zamboni man, oh the Zamboni man The Zamboni man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the ice skate good You've seen "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", right? If you haven't, please go find a copy →

Fanfare for the Common Man

I remember first hearing Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man in junior high (thanks Pop for making us listen to your extensive music collection on the way to school and on car trips -- I'm sure we complained, but I have a definite appreciation for things I might not have otherwise!) and I've loved it ever since I first →

Maui Day 5: Mele Kalikimaka is NOT the thing to say (unless you really want an earworm)

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day That's the island greeting that we send to you From the land where palm trees sway Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way To say "Merry Christmas to you". Poor John. For the past →

Well I tell you folks it’s heaven to go riding down the trail/ While the desert sun goes down

Yesterday at work I glanced out the window at around 3:45 or so and was surprised to realize that instead of the pouring rain that had been predicted, it was sunny, with only patchy clouds scattered across the sky. I wrestled mightily with my conscience as I watched the shadows lengthen across the floor--besides the fact I was supposed to →

Thanksgiving 2010: warm, dry, and quite well-fed

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Competing, arranging, roasting, glowing, sparkling, and serving were taken by my cousin Grant -- we swapped cameras for the afternoon and I lent him my 50mm lens, and he did a fantastic job! Thanks Grant!! :-) .

A little running music

I know I'm always looking for excuses to cop out of my morning runs, but on a beautiful morning like yesterday, stopping to take pictures wasn't so much an excuse as a necessity. I had my cameraphone with me (acting as a music player and route tracker)as I ran down through Old Sacramento and across the Tower Bridge to Raley →

♫ 3/4 time ♫

Another one from Second Saturday.

What's better than Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor on the accordion? Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor on FOUR accordions!!

Watch these kids on the piano (old piano with the keys fused so that it was a public art piece rather than a piano.) HILARIOUS. These accordion players are a Ukranian group called Harmonia -- I bought their CD of classical tunes. LOVE it. :-)

Euro Trip Day 32: I don’t care if there are other neat cities. I want to stay in Budapest, darn it

I feel like I should specify that Day 32 was July 6th, since I'm not getting these posts posted before bedtime anymore, like I'd originally intended. My plan before I left was just to post one picture and a quick writeup of the day, but I like doing the longer posts (despite the time they take) because I like working →

Neighborhood night life

I never thought I'd enjoy living downtown in a large largish city, but know what? I really really do. Yeah, I hate it when the garbage truck shows up at 5:00 in the morning to empty the dumpster in the alley behind my bedroom. I'm not a big fan of the hipsters that hang out all day outside the business →

Some voices I could recognize anywhere

Totally randomly I ended up with a free ticket tonight to see Arlo Guthrie in concert at UC Davis. I grew up with both of my parents playing tapes (and then CDs, and now mp3s) of his music, and I've a huge soft spot in my music heart for him, but for some reason it never occurred to me that →

Leahy concert in Modesto last night

So I should be leaving for work, but I wanted to get this video uploaded. I went to see Leahy in concert last night (second time I've seen them!) and it was SUCH a great concert. They really do put on a fun show. :-) This one is actually the six-year-old son of the fiddler in the blue shirt in the →
