Maui Day 5: Mele Kalikimaka is NOT the thing to say (unless you really want an earworm)

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day
That’s the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii’s way
To say “Merry Christmas to you”.

Poor John. For the past two three days, he’s been tortured with the Bing Crosby version of Mele Kalikimaka stuck in his head. Having suffered from this particular earworm in the past, I realize how obnoxious it truly is… which is why I’m posting it here with the hopes that I manage to afflict all of you with it. My little Christmas gift to you, ya know?

I know, there’s a special place in hell for people who do things like deliberately trying to afflict other people with earworms. My seat has long since been reserved.

Anyway, we spent another day at the beach and snorkeling yesterday, and I chickened out on bringing my camera in the water with me (even though I vacuum-packed it first, it was just in a ziploc bag rather than completely sealed in plastic.) So no beach pictures for you… didn’t I post enough the other day? I do feel kind of bad, as I’d meant to take a couple, but by the time I got out of the water, I was so tired that I completely forgot. Oh well.

But I can’t complain about yesterday. It went something like this: breakfast, blog, read, relax, beach, snorkel, relax, lunch, read, oreos+milk, nap, read, dinner, relax, blog, figure out transportation back to the airport, sleep.

Oh, and, ummm, we got lost in there somewhere (well, not lost so much as one of those we-see-where-we-need-to-be-now-how-the-hell-do-we-get-there kind of moments.) Good times!

All in all, it was a great day… except for that having to figure out transportation bit. By the time you read this, we’ll most likely be on a bus or plane on our way home, or already home… just in time for another cold rainstorm to hit Sacramento. Whee. I do have to admit that I miss my Moose… but it’s been nice to wear shorts and t-shirts for the past few days. SO nice.

So here’s some randomness from today.

No-fog for snorkel mask. Directions include "1 big gob", too much and you "could feel the flames of Babylon on your baby blues", and "looks blue like boysenberry but do NOT put this stuff on your shave ice." HA!! :-)

Directions for using the 24-hour snorkel rental return include, after opening the return box with the proper combo, "Tho at sumbitch in ere." Wonder how many people notice the fine print on this? :-)

Dinner at L&L BBQ. Garlic grilled ahi for me, lau lau for John. Rice and macaroni salad come standard.

Even if we could have afforded to rent a car, I'm not so sure we could have afforded gas. Geez.

As connected as we are internet-wise, it's scarily easy to forget that the world is going on around us. The insularity of vacation, I suppose. I felt the same way this past summer--even though I was online a lot, I still felt somewhat disconnected with what was going on in the rest of the world.
